Towards Outcome‐related Measures of Collective Services: an Assessment of the Protection provided by Policing in the United Kingdom

Abstract

It is generally established that indicators of output used in the national accounts should reflect quality change. This paper suggests one way of applying this principle to policing, making the assumption that the protection offered by the police (the outcome) depends on what there is to be protected as well as on the amount of policing offered. Illustrative calculations are performed for the United Kingdom.
