Abstract

The economic literature has shown that the adoption of ICT increases the volatility of economic performance across economic sectors. This paper analyzes whether existing inter-sectoral relationships (described by the input-output matrices) explains the impact of ICT on volatility in economic output (value added and productivity) at the sectoral level. The analysis considers a subset of European countries between 1995 and 2006. The results of the paper show that the impact of ICT use on output volatility at the sectoral level in Europe is positive and statistically signi cant for sectors with stronger (commercial) relationships with other sectors. This e ect seems to be concentrated on the service sectors.
